News - Seaside towns ‘increase teen sex’

Teenagers in English seaside resorts are more likely to get pregnant than those elsewhere due to a “” party culture, a report says.

The ’s Teenage Pregnancy Unit found the of alcohol and drugs encouraged “sexual risk-taking” among girls as young as 14.

They were also often exploited by tourists and seasonal workers.

Official figures show Blackpool has 74.8 conceptions per 1,000 girls aged 15 to 17. The national average is 42.6.

‘Sun, sea and (casual) sex’

The figure for Hastings is 61.3 and for Southend it is 50.4.

The government report - Living on the Edge - found a feeling of ” excitement” among young people in seaside towns.

This led to “detachment, the suspension of reality”.

Sexual health services within the towns were often “difficult to access”.

The report accuses the entertainment industry of luring visitors to the seaside with “sun, sea, sand and (casual) sex”, which serves to encourage “early sexual activity and unprotected sex”.

Some 68 groups of 12 to 17 year olds and 80 key professionals, young parents and transient workers were interviewed by academics from Brighton University, Hull University and Liverpool University.

The research was carried out at resorts in the East Midlands, North West and South East of England.

The number of under-18s who became pregnant in England and Wales rose from 40,966 in 2001 to 41,868 in 2002, the most recent year for which figures are available.

The government said this was a “blip” in a trend which had seen the rate fall during the preceding three years.

Last year, ministers announced a 40m teenage pregnancy strategy to run until 2006.

News - US teens celebrate ‘purity day’

Original article ‘’

Thousands of teenagers across the US are celebrating a “Day of Purity” to promote sexual abstinence.

High school students are wearing white t-shirts and encourage classmates to remain virgins until they are married.

The conservative US Christian group Liberty Counsel, which organised the day, said US teenagers should make a “public demonstration” of purity.

It said the day offered teenagers a chance to stand in opposition to “a culture of moral decline”.

purity’

Liberty Counsel, which says it works to promote “religious freedom, the sanctity of human life and the traditional family”, said young Americans faced a daily barrage of sexual messages in contemporary culture.

The way sex is talked about, it’s so casual, like it’s an everyday thing, like going to McDonald’s

Teenage Day of Purity supporter

It said the Day of Purity enabled teenagers to make their voices heard and become part of America’s true “counter-culture”.

“When the youth of America stand up for sexual purity they send a message to parents, churches, communities, legislators and the media that they want a different America,” it said in a statement on its website.

It added it had chosen the day before St Valentine’s Day to encourage “purity in dating relationships” until marriage.

Teens ‘exposed’

US teenager Melissa Millis, who says she will wear a white t-shirt to promote the Day of Purity at her Michigan state school, told the Associated Press news agency she was tired of feeling pressurised.

‘’The way sex is talked about, it’s so casual, like it’s an everyday thing, like going to McDonald’s,” she said.

US President George W Bush has massively increased funding and support for the US sexual abstinence movement during his term in office.

Christian abstinence True Love Waits says it has more than one million young members.

However, critics say the programmes are unrealistic and leave teenagers exposed to pregnancy and sexual diseases.

News - Asbos to stop sex at picnic site

People who use a picnic area in for sex could soon be issued with anti-social behaviour orders (Asbos) to curb the activities.

The Stickney picnic area, on the A16, has become notorious for casual sex and is on web sites.

Nearby residents have unsuccessfully tried to reclaim the area for by holding a party for villagers.

Asbos have been used to clamp down on kerb crawlers with people who break the orders facing jail.

We’ve only got the picnic area and therefore we need it and that’s why we’re going to fight for it

Brian Wood

The decision to begin working towards handing out Asbos was made at a meeting organised by the Stickney parish council on Thursday.

Brian Wood from the parish council said: “Unfortunately large groups of males tend to consort there and engage in overt acts of a sexual nature effectively precluding the normal type of user from using it.

“We’ve got a local guide troop that had have been excluded from the picnic area because of the nature of these acts.”

The site has been plagued by this behaviour for 10 years, but according to local officials the problem is escalating.

“We’ve only got the picnic area and therefore we need it and that’s why we’re going to fight for it,” Mr Wood said.

The council says it will rely on local people to report any lewd behaviour at the picnic site.

News - Craigslist’s silent emergence

Read source of it on the page

They’re first-name type of guys; they wear sandals; they never, ever stick to the point.

“I’m a figure of beauty,” Craig proclaims, lounging in his comfortable chair, feet firmly on the table. “But while I reek of glamour, it’s just an illusion”.

“Even when I was youthful, I was not very youthful,” the 52-year-old blurts, only for Jim to chip in: “Old young man becomes young old man.”

Global reach

Don’t be deceived, though: this sunny Californian banter conceals an online venture that has become a cultural phenomenon.

Craigslist.com website

Craigslist’s design is deliberately simple

Craigslist.com, their classified adverts website, has quietly emerged as one of the top 10 internet companies in the world in terms of page views, attracting more than 10 million unique visitors per month and with a presence in 175 cities across 34 countries.

The sites’ success has come in spite of, or perhaps because of, their notably basic, almost amateurish, design.

“Brevity is the soul of wit,” Craig declares, insisting that “the site is deliberately very plain”.

Everything and nothing is a commodity on this virtual flea market, whose addictive nature has arisen from a bizarre blend of shopping and flirting: anything from cheap sofas or bicycles or electronic gadgets, to new apartments and casual sex is brokered here.

It is free as well, for everyone except companies placing job adverts in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York, and even these fees are low, ranging from $25 to $75.

Craigslist’s popularity has seen it tipped as the next Google or Ebay, and made Craig and Jim into hot media property hounded by Hollywood moguls keen to bring their experiences to the silver screen.

Numbers game

The figures seem to justify the hype.

“We think of ourselves as a community service, but we have a business structure out of necessity
Craig Newmark
Customer service rep and founder
Craigslist.com

More than five million new classified adverts per month generate 2.5 billion page views.

Each month, the website runs a million new forums postings and publishes 160,000 job adverts, according to company PR Susan Mactavish Best, who has “known Craig for years” and who also happens to cohabit with Jim.

And all this is run by a team of no more than 18 staff to look after the technical kit, to moderate the discussion boards and to deal with what Craig describes as ” apartment brokers in New York”.

The sites are self-policing: if enough users who find an advert offensive click to have it removed, it will simply disappear.

Business or pleasure?

Which raises the question: is Craigslist a business, or simply an unusually successful hobby?

New York street scene

Buying an old bicycle has become a new way of meeting people

“We’re a business,” responds Jim hesitantly.

Although the company is tight-lipped about its finances, estimates put its annual earnings at around $10m; not enormous compared with its potential, yet sufficient to ensure Craig can afford the “few luxuries” he enjoys - namely “gadgets and overpriced coffee”.

“We think of ourselves as a community service, but we have a business structure out of necessity,” explains Craig.

Craig and Jim are actively resisting the temptation to maximise profits, though with investors desperate to get in on the act they are having to fight hard to stay true to their beliefs.

Share and share alike

Already, though, shares in Craigslist have trickled through their fingers: Ebay recently acquired a 25% stake from a former employee, a deal neither Craig nor Jim is keen to comment on.

“We don’t talk about who owns us,” says Jim, insisting that Ebay “has a similar philosophy to ours”.

The deal seems to be a sore point, though. When asked about what the former employee has done with the money from Ebay, Jim’s reply is curt.

“We’re not really in contact with them so we’re not sure what they’re doing.”

Lack of trust

Craigslist’s rivals are not fooled by its apparently listless approach to business.

Some analysts are already predicting that newspaper classified could vanish entirely.

Investment bank Goldman Sachs describes Craigslist as “a real menace” to newspapers, and warns that “all publishers face a threat to their profitability”.

Neither Craig nor Jim seem to lament the threat they pose to the future of local newspapers, however.

“People trust conventional media less and less,” says Craig.

Adds Jim: “Where do you want to throw your sympathies? With huge conglomerates or with millions of people who can use our services to get on with their lives?”

News - Uganda Aids education ‘working’

A study says there has been a significant drop in the number of Aids cases in Uganda.

The study in the journal, Science, attributes the decrease to a successful public education campaign.

This has led to a reduction in the number of people having casual sex, as well as the willingness of Ugandans to openly discuss HIV issues.

The scientists called for the Ugandan approach to Aids to be adopted in other .

Casual sex

HIV cases in Uganda dropped by 70% in the 1990s.

The government’s message clearly stated that Aids was deadly and that it spread through sexual activity.

Because of this, HIV is now openly amongst friends and family.

This led to a fall of 60% of people reporting they had casual sex.

Other African countries studied have similar levels of condom use as Uganda, but little reduction in the number of sexual partners.

According to the scientists, only a vaccine - as yet - that worked in 80% of all cases would have a similar effect.

News - Thai students block condom plan

Thailand’s university student leaders say they have voted against proposals to put condom machines on campuses.

The Secretary General of the Students Union Network, Vitoon Chomchaipol, said Thailand’s Health Ministry plans would encourage casual sex, and were therefore not the best way to fight the problem of Aids.

The proposal comes as the ministry warned on Thursday that young Thais were currently the section of society facing the highest risk of HIV in the country and that rates among this age group were rising due to unsafe sex.

We are concerned that with easy access to condoms, the majority, who are reluctant now, will jump onto the (casual sex) bandwagon

Vitoon Chomchaipol, student union leader

The ministry has already installed thousands of condom in restaurants, bars and department stores.

“We totally don’t agree with the plan. It’s not necessary and
not suitable as it could mislead students to believe that teachers
approve of them having sex,” Mr Vitoon told the French news agency AFP.

“Casual sex is a problem a small group of students,” The Nation newspaper quoted Mr Vitoon as saying.

“We
are concerned that with easy access to condoms, the majority, who are reluctant now, will jump onto the bandwagon,” he said.

Some 78,000 Thai youth aged 15 to 24 were currently HIV-positive due to unsafe sex practices, the Health Ministry survey found.

One million of Thailand’s 63 million people are Aids/HIV
positive.

News - Are we having more sex?

Whilst there has been huge speculation about changes in sexual behaviour over the last century, there has been surprisingly little rigorous research. The emergence of HIV highlighted an urgent need for such data and the National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Behaviour (NATSAL) was created.

The first survey consisted of 18,876 interviews carried out in the UK between May 1990 and November 1991. It covered almost every area including the age people lost their virginity, homosexual experiences, and the number of sexual partners. It also looked for differences between demographic groups and attitudes towards sex and sexuality.

The results were fascinating, but it was the follow up survey in 1999-2001, which showed conclusively just how fast the sexual behaviour of people in Britain was changing.

Number of partners

For men and women, the average number of lifetime partners had grown significantly between 1990 and 2000. On average, for men, it had grown from 4 to 6, and for women, it had doubled from 2 to 4. The number of people reporting one or no sexual partners in their lifetime had also decreased. Younger people (aged 16-24) reported the highest median average of partners for the last five years (3 for men, 2 for women).

Sex in the last four weeks

Researchers found that the number of sexual encounters in the previous four weeks was very similar for those questioned in 1990 and 2000. So we aren’t necessarily having more sex - just sex with more people.

Casual sex

There has been a substantial change in the attitude to one night stands. In 1990 53% of men and 79% of women considered one night stands to be wrong. Ten years later the figures had fallen to 35% and 54% respectively. However, Britain remains highly intolerant towards sex. Indeed there was a slight increase in hostility to affairs for both men and women

Losing your virginity

In 1990, the average age for losing one’s virginity was 17 for men and 18 for women. Ten years later it was 17 for both men and women. Notably, there was a doubling of the proportion of women who reported first intercourse before 16 years of age - from 10.3% to 20.4%. For men the figure rose from 20% to 27%

The agony aunt’s experience

Deirdre Sanders

Deirdre Sanders of the “Dear Deirdre” column is a top agony aunt

The facts come as no surprise to Britain’s most widely read agony aunt, Deidre Sanders. Her page in The Sun has been running for 25 years, and is the second most read part of the newspaper. She gets 800 letters and e-mails a week, and has seen a big change in her mailbag since she began.

“From younger people, they used to be quite simply nave questions really. They might be worries about their body or how you get to know a boy or girl. I still get inquiries like that but also now from that same age group I’ll be getting much more heavy-duty questions.”

“It was all summed up for me by one… which is a 16-year-old girl involved with an 18-year-old boy. She wanted to lose her virginity in a threesome with another girl, and it’s actually the boy writing to me because he’s a bit worried about what he’s getting involved in.”

“It was absolutely inconceivable when I started this job, that you’d have a 16-year-old girl thinking about a threesome.”

Deidre is shocked by the continuing levels of ignorance about protection. She believes passionately that relationships and sex education should be taught at an early age, and that it should be compulsory. “I’m surprised to find myself saying this, but it does appear that the situation is even worse.”

“For example I had a letter from a young guy who was gay and he had no idea about HIV, how it’s transmitted, how you protect yourself against it, and you just think… how has he managed to get through to that age and no one has got that information through to him?”

And Britain’s most read agony aunt is worried not just about the physical about our sexual behaviour - but about the long term emotional effects.

“I think there’s a whole generation, or generations of young people who are not happy with this, they’re not having a good time, they’re picking up infections which are going to damage them physically, some of them aren’t going to know that they’re not going to have children as a result of this, they’re not having good sex, they’re not enjoying this, they’re not having relationships they’re finding rewarding.”

News - Teenagers keep ‘chastity’ pledge

A graduation ceremony is to be held for teenagers who stayed celibate for 15 weeks in a study called “Romance Academy”.

The project, involving six boys and six girls, was aimed at reducing teenage pregnancies and educating youngsters about relationship pressures.

The Vale of Glamorgan Romance Academy, which ran groups in Penarth and Dinas Powys, described it as “”.

The graduates, aged 14-18, will receive certificates in Barry on Friday night.

The Romance Academy project began in London in 2005.

But co-ordinator Naomi Roberts was inspired to bring it to Wales after seeing the scheme featured last year on BBC2 “No Sex Please We’re Teenagers”.

She said: “From my own experience of being a mother it would have been if I could have sent my daughter to something like the Romance Academy.

“People do seem to feel that if you do not have sex on the third date you are flawed or not a normal person
Naomi Roberts, project co-ordinator

“She suffered some difficulties in her teenage years and my experience in dealing with this made me think that I could help others face similar sorts of problems and pressures.

“We want to reduce teenage pregnancies and reduce the amount of teenagers having casual sex. It reduces peoples’ self esteem.”

The 12 youngsters were selected via auditions in the Vale of Glamorgan with the of their parents.

Mrs Roberts said: “We made sure we picked people from a range of . Some were outgoing, some were shy, some had had sex, some hadn’t.”

Before joining the academies, run by a male and female youth worker, the teenagers committed to refrain from sexual activity for the duration of the project.

Nathan Scott-Cook and Chloe Roberts ran the Penarth academy

They had talks with teenage mothers and also took home realistic baby dolls to experience being a young parent.

Mrs Roberts added: “People do seem to feel that if you do not have sex on the third date you are flawed or not a normal person.

“We get them to discuss what they really want to happen in the course of their relationships and help them to go about achieving this.

“We are finding that the pupils aren’t so quick to jump into bed with someone after discussing relationships in this way.”

Youth worker Nathan Scott-Cook, 35, who ran the Penarth group, said taking the pledge helped the teenagers to “really question their value of sex and what the culture around them dishes out.”

He said many of the teenagers changed their views on sex, adding: “The boys have said ‘I would treat girls differently now and not view them as an object.”

The graduation ceremony will be held at Barry Memorial Hall at 1930 GMT.

News - Protest at care home closure plan

Read more on site
Elderly residents of care homes in County Durham mounted a demonstration against plans which could see authority-run centres close.

Care workers, residents and relatives were expected to gather outside County Hall on Thursday as Labour councillors held a group meeting.

Families of elderly residents fear cost-cutting plans could see 12 council-run homes close.

deferred a decision until a later date.

Durham County Council has said it believes it could save 3m a year if it closed down its remaining homes, which it says are two-thirds full.

The union Unison is concerned about job losses, the impact on older people and about handing over all the care homes to the private sector.

The council said no decision had been made and changes would not be rushed.

Closure trauma

Union regional officer Howard Pink said: “It’s appalling that Durham County Council is considering such a drastic and decision.

“The loss of jobs will be horrific, and result in many compulsory . We know from past experience that many older people simply don’t survive the trauma of home closures.”

The council believes that by pulling out of residential care it would have the money to provide an extra 2,000 home care hours a week and an extra 78 care beds.

Councillor Christine Smith, whose portfolio covers adult care, said: “I can give every assurance that we will not be kicking people out of homes at short notice.

“If there is a decision to close, each person will be looked at and their needs will be paramount.

“We will be looking to see with the resident and relatives what alternative provision we can offer for them with our partners in the independent sector.”

News - Kenyans find pots of love online

“Meet Kenyan chicks and guys,” reads the opening page at www.lovepot.com as Claire, a 32-year-old career woman in the capital, Nairobi, plucks up the courage to register.

She has been trying to find the man of her dreams through many other ways, but without success.

“To be honest, funerals and weddings have been the only way to meet people. Clubbing doesn’t work,” she says.

“I know plenty of people who are now trying this out and I thought: ‘This year I’m going to try it. Internet dating, here I come.’”

Too busy

Many young urban Kenyans are finding it hard to meet a partner because of changing lifestyles.

Internet dating is the modern way of meeting people
Kenyan man

Erastus Wachira, the of Lovepot.com, which claims to have enabled “thousands of mates to tie the knot”, says urbanisation is the key.

“We looked at the lives of many young people, and they have very busy job schedules and don’t really have much time to socialise,” he says.

“With current we thought the internet was an easier way of people getting together.”

The website is just one sign of how things are changing in Kenya - and for some young adults it is not .

“Internet dating is definitely the modern way of meeting people. In Africa we’re following more towards the West with our busy lives and going online to find solace and a significant other,” says one man in a Nairobi bar.

Caution

Not everyone is convinced - or at least they will not publicly admit that they have logged on for love.

It is more difficult to build a relationship with someone you meet out of the blue - in a traditional setting, you already knew who you were talking to
Prof Ken Ouko

“Dating online is pretty awesome, but you can’t rely on it as you don’t know the person,” a woman in her twenties says.

“Some of the Western people you meet on these websites are very weird, so you have to be very careful lest you meet someone who’s really weird sexually and intellectually.”

But just like other signs of modernity, internet dating may soon be widely accepted.

Ken Ouko, a sociology professor at the University of Nairobi, says this is likely to make life more for young adults in the long run.

“It is more difficult to build a relationship and develop trust with someone you meet out of the blue,” he says.

“In a traditional setting, you already knew who you were talking to, their parentage. You knew the family well, so even your parent could easily tell you: ‘That’s a good family.’”

Resolution

For Naomi, a mother of four young adults, urban dating is a concern that may lead to loose living.

This 39-year-old looked promising… Description: ‘Hot’
Claire

“What I’ve observed from society makes me feel afraid. As I see it there’s too much freedom - the wrong kind of freedom,” she says.

“We never used to approach men, we waited at home. They were able to identify a good girl and then finally in that situation you waited to be asked to be married.”

And for Claire, the modern way of meeting her man has so far failed. After scanning through a list of 114 men on Lovepot.com, she has not been tempted to click on that “contact” button.

“This 39-year-old looked a promising option… Description: ‘Hot’. But he was seeking a female between 20 and 30… and he lived in the UK.”

But she is determined to stick to her New Year’s resolution and not give up the internet.
